Could you share the story behind your latest song and what inspired its creation?
We needed a track to rock a stadium. We heard Seven Nation Army and knew we could do something cooler that had a larger sexual organ(s). We envisioned the massive organ(s) and then BAM: Grind Zone came out. Like the birthing process itself, MAGIC HAPPENED.
How do you approach the process of songwriting, and are there any specific themes or
emotions you tend to explore in your music?
We toss around song titles/song concepts whichever one makes us laugh the most, is generally the winner. Grind Zone started as a general song of whipping the work and taking care of business. The emotion is whatever is sending the energy to the power source. When we find the power source, we head in that direction until the track is straight SMACK.
As an indie musician, how do you navigate the balance between creative freedom and
commercial appeal?
We are just doing this to make our 13 year old selves stoked. METAL + RAP: the pinnacle of the human experience. What is a better genre of music? That’s right, nothing.
What do you find most challenging about being an independent artist in today’s music
industry?
Making money on cool music and not succumbing to the trash can muzak that all these feeble minded musicians are making.
Can you talk about your experiences collaborating with other artists or musicians? How
does it influence your creative process?
KICKNUT is a collaboration. The entire process is fully collaborative. Proper bands are collaboration. And from that process we trust in the music. That music we couldn’t have come up with on our own, comes out. And it’s always better and cooler than music we’d make on our own. That’s the beauty of working with other humans and not just the machine.
What role does technology and social media play in promoting your music and
connecting with your audience?
We use Instagram. It’s prolly just about jumped the shark. We will create a new social media platform called KICKNUT that will eventually overtake FAANG.
Are there any particular artists or genres that have had a significant impact on your
musical style?
All Metal, All Rap. And a never ending supply of checking out other musics. It never ends: Madonna, Meshuggah, Mozart, Miles, Megadeth, Morgan Wallen, Mac Miller, Mary C——and on.
Indie musicians often have a close relationship with their fanbase. How do you engage
with your fans and build a dedicated community around your music?
Send them sweet memes and make the laugh. They do that for us. It’s a beautiful community.
Could you describe a memorable live performance experience or tour that has had a
lasting impact on you and your music?
We don’t play live. We will one day, at MSG. We are waiting to crush the audience with the best backing band every, while we full time flip off the crowd for the whole show.
In an era of streaming platforms, how do you feel about the changing landscape of
music consumption and its impact on independent musicians?
It’s definitely fascinating. Constantly changing. Five year olds checking out the Eagles. Old heads getting down with Travis Scott. It’s got to be better? It’s definitely different. Peep KICKNUT for the future of music.
